Arren Williams is the name, and I'm a stylist, editor and trend reporter. You'll catch my work regularly popping up in print in the likes of the National Post, House & Home and elsewhere. I'm also a guest expert on Citytv's CityLine, and you can occasionally find me on HGTV as well as on ABC 7 News in Chicago.

To keep things fun I've tapped a couple of friends - Julia Black and Jenn Hannotte - to contribute their views on design too. Enjoy!

Ask Arren > small window

I have a small window on my office wall that's positioned in the middle vertically on the wall, and off centre horizontally. i'm not sure how i should treat it... do i put up blinds up high (how high - almost to the ceiling? 6" from the ceiling?) to make it seem like the window starts up higher? i thought of putting a picture rail the same width of the window above the window and putting up pictures on the rail? what would work best to make the window seem less dinky :-)? Here's a picture of wall and window.

thanks so much,

Hi J, I think anything you might try to do to the wall and trim around the window will only draw attention to how, ahem, dinky and off-set it is. With that being said, I think you're totally on the right track with a wall-to-wall curtain that you already have. My advice would be to (splurge alert) have custom drapes made (mounted on a ceiling-mount drapery track, sometimes called a hospital track) that have a band of colour at the same height of your window. You could also have a go yourself (and save some cash) with the drapes and rod you currently have, by either ironing-on, or stitching, a grosgrain ribbon horizontally that hits top-and-bottom of where your window meets the curtain panels.

Hope that's a help!

Cheers, Arren

Thanks Arren. I hadn't thought of the horizontal stripe on the drapes to match the window height. I will try that for sure - and I think I'll do it myself... I'm pretty crafty :-) Love your new house in the new issue of HH, btw (I liked your previous house as well!).
