Ask Arren > shower wall niche

Hi Arren,

I am remodelling my bathroom right now and will be turning my tub/shower combo into a single large marble tiled shower with all the amenities. One thing is still outstanding... I am still undecided about creating a wall niche for soap/shampoo etc rather than having a basket on the floor or attachment to the shower bar. What is your opinion on the pros and cons of putting one in.

Thanks
Diana

Hi Diana, I love the idea of incorporating a shower niche into your design (I have one in my master bath and it's definitely useful). Here are a few tips for you on the niche front, since some contractors complain that they may leak over the long term -

Make sure the niche is not directly in line of water flowing from the shower.
Ensure your contractor uses correct materials to frame out the niche, like cement board, not green board.
Ask your contractor to angle the base of the niche slightly so that water will drain out naturally, and also make sure that it has been correctly caulked and sealed once the tiling has been completed.

Cheers, Arren
