Ask Arren > Marble counter tops

Hi Arren,

I have a question regarding marble kitchen counter tops. From everything I read, it is definitely not the best option due to staining and etching and its high maintenance and it isn't recommended for the kitchen at all. So if it is so bad, then why do I see marble kitchen counter tops in almost every decorating magazine? I think the majority of kitchens in these magazines have marble counter tops. Do the people that have these marble counters just never use their kitchen? Can you shed some light on this for me?

I am a food writer/food stylist and recipe creator. I am in my kitchen cooking at least 5 hours a day. Oh yea I have two hockey playing girls and an always hungry husband I cook for. I have carrera (spelling?) marble counters. I chose them as I am in my kitchen so much the hard look of granite did not suit me.

Anyhow yes there can be staining (mine is honed not polished) but it is minimal and the counter doesn't like lemon juice. But all and all the minimal staining which you just see in certain light is by far and away made up for me by the beautiful soft feel/look. However if you like perfection maybe you don't want a natural stone - as it will never be perfect.
