PROJECT MILL RUN

Arren was the designer on the extensive renovation of this home outside of Toronto. The plan was to take the tired early 2000’s interiors and make the space feel both open and contemporary for a young and stylish family. The home was published in Style at Home magazine’s April/May 2023 issue. The interior will also be seen on Cityline.

Main Kitchen Area: The kitchen was designed without upper cabinets to make the space feel more open. The material used for both countertops, walls, and to wrap the island, is a stylish sintered stone material sourced at Ciot -the Neolith Calacatta Luxe in the Ultrasoft finish. Perfect for a young family, it’s both durable, heatproof and stain-proof.

The cabinetry was switched from the original French Country look to a minimal and simple custom oak flat fronted cabinetry. An Aga Mercury induction stove from the UK references one of the homeowner’s British background. Above the stove, a custom hood was framed with curved corners and tiled in small-scale Matchstick White Glossy Tile from Ciot.

For the sink area, the Riobel Azure Bridge Pulldown Kitchen Faucet and Rohl Forze 1 1/2 Bowl Stainless Steel Kitchen Sink were sourced from House of Rohl.

The Krema wall sconces at left and right of the sink, and the Nomad pendant lights above the island were found at Luminaire Authentik.

Throughout the kitchen, dining and coffee area, the paint colour is Chantilly Lace OC65 from Benjamin Moore. All hardware, Elte.

Dining Area: The view was opened up with new aluminum framed windows in a black finish. The dining table is the Swell Table in Oyster White, made in Quebec by Johnstone Béton Architectural in a cast concrete. Above, the two-tone pendant light is the Lov Pendant in Matte Beige and Matte Nude from Luminaire Authentik. The midcentury dining chairs were a vintage find from Facebook Marketplace.

Coffee Area: An unused space within the kitchen/dining area was repurposed to include room to prep and serve coffee and other drinks, as well as to max out storage. Mirroring the main kitchen area, the counters are in the Neolith Calacatta Luxe, while the tiled backsplash is Matchstick Large White Matte Tile, all from Ciot.

Adding in Riobel’s Azure Bar and Food Prep Faucet, along with the Rohl Forze Single Bowl Bar and Food Prep Sink from House of Rohl added even more usability to the space.

Below the counter, things stay cool with the Avanti Elite Dual Zone Wine Chiller from Goemans, while above, the stylish wood clad Elektra Verve espresso machine sourced at Zuccarini stands at the ready.

Bringing in one of the homeowner’s Greek background was an important touch, so we were happy to find ‘Five Openings Vase’ and ‘Vase With Cross Pattern’. from Cretan artist Eleni Psyllaki’s Studio Paradissi.

The Monsaraz Rug from Casa Cubista helps ground the space.

Mud Room / Powder Room: Off the kitchen stands a space which is both functional and stylish, with tons of storage for coats, boots and soccer gear. Here, mini Porcelain Mosaic Branco Porcelana Tiles wrap the seating area, keeping it easily cleanable, while on the floor Terrazzo Collection Docks Grey Honed Tiles look chic while hiding errant mud and muck. Both were sourced at Ciot.

The Dome ceiling fixture from EQ3, Hannah Peterson ‘Green Guise’ artwork from The Poster Club and velvet toss cushions from Zara Home layer in extra style.

Wall colour, October Mist 1495. Trim colour Chantilly Lace OC65. Benjamin Moore.

In the powder room, simple Evolution Blanco Matte Tiles are laid vertically to feel more contemporary, while the counter is in Neolith New York New York Silk, both sourced at Ciot.

The sink is a standout - the Canadian made Parro Sink in Mousse from Mudd Concrete - paired with Riobel’s sculptural Parabola Vessel Faucet in Brushed Gold from House of Rohl. Above, the mirror is my own design (sadly no longer available), and the offset sconce is the Declan Wall Light from Elte. The ceiling light is a vintage find.

Principal Bathroom: Previously, this space appeared to have been forgotten, so time was taken to give this room both presence and style.

A wall-mounted vanity in a soft grey adds storage, and is topped by Neolith’s durable New York New York Silk that picks up on the handmade look and mixed grey tones of the Rice Grigio Lux Tiles, both of which are from Ciot. The aged brass Barrington Edge Pulls from Rejuvenation sing back to the similarly toned Soho plumbing fixtures from Elte used throughout. The mixed colours in the Terrazzo Collection Urban White tile from Ciot help to tie everything together.

Since space was tight, lighting and mirrors are combined in the Kato LED lit mirrors found at Renwil. Both the toilet and bath tub are original to the house. Next to the tub, the Reinaldo Sanguino Stool from Hollace Cluny adds a hit of painterly colour. The hanging towels are Provence Linen Huckaback towels from LinenMe.

Kid’s Bathroom: This space is all about colour, thanks to the walls and ceiling in Benjamin Moore’s Aura Bath & Spa juicy Tofino Sunset CC156. The fresh tint of the custom cabinetry is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Avon Green. The walls are clad in Matchstick Large White Matte Tile and the floor in Terrazzo Collection Docks Grey Honed Tile, both found at Ciot.

The black Blade faucet is Aquabrass, and the mirror above is the classic Umbra Hub. The Bell Flush Mount ceiling fixture was scored at CB2, the Acacia Milk Stool from EQ3 and the artwork hung beneath the window is the lovely Sofia Lind ‘You’ found at Old Faithful Shop.
